The nominal gross domestic product (GDP), which does not take into account inflation as opposed to real GDP, was estimated at 88,582.7 billion FCFA ($161 billion) in 2020 for the WAEMU area, compared to 83,301.6 billion FCFA ($151.4 billion) in 2019, an increase of 6.34%, according to BCEAO's calculations.
This solid performance was born by all the Union economies which saw their production volumes increase during the period under review despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
Unquestionably, Cote d'Ivoire remains the locomotive of the subregion with a nominal GDP of 34,298.9 billion FCFA and also one of the most dynamic economies in the area.
This is followed by Senegal and Mali, which GDP amounted 13,655.4 billion FCFA and 10,125.6 billion FCFA respectively. In decreasing order, Burkina Faso (9,369.2 billion FCFA), Benin (8,432.2 billion FCFA), Niger (7,610.4 billion FCFA), Togo (4,230.6 billion FCFA) and Guinea-Bissau (860.4 billion FCFA).
This change in the Union's production volume was mainly driven by the consolidation of the recovery in economic activity in the fourth quarter of 2020, marked by an increase of 1.3% of GDP compared to the same period of the previous year, after the slight rebound of 0.6% a quarter earlier.
