Togolese economist, Kako Nubukpo, one of the most fervent opponents of the CFA Franc, has been appointed economic adviser to the Chairman of the WAEMU Committee. He announced his appointment on social media on January 5th.
"As you know, I have been working on the monetary question of our nations for 20 years now, this is above all duties. I would like to take this opportunity to announce my appointment as Economic Adviser to the Chairman of the WAEMU Committee," he said on Linkedin.
This appointment may seem surprising to someone who has always had problems holding high positions in both the Togolese and international administrations because of his stance on a currency that is considered taboo in political circles. In June 2015, he had to give up his duties as Minister of Prospective Affairs and Public Policy Evaluation in his country and a senior position within the international organization of La Francophonie in March 2018.
"Everyone has the choice to live for his ambitions or his convictions. Whenever the two went against each other I chose to be the voice of my convictions. I have no enemies, I just have values and principles and a passion, Africa," he wrote at the end of 2017.
He is an emeritus professor of economics and, until recently, dean of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Lomé. He works at the University of Oxford in England and for various institutions.
His arrival at WAEMU Committee comes at a time when the question of the reform of the CFA Franc and the transition to Eco, the regional currency of ECOWAS, are in the news. Kako Nubukpo did not hide his disapproval of the latest changes to the CFA franc announced at the end of 2019 by Ivorian president Alassane Ouattara and French president Emmanuel Macron, denouncing the maintenance of parity with the euro.
